The forest areas of Roslagen boast two exciting natural environments: a bog area rich in orchids and a diverse hay meadow. Kornamossen is a large, relatively untouched bog considered one of the county’s most valuable. The groundwater has a high calcium content, which has created a rich fen with orchids such as the marsh helleborine, the lesser butterfly-orchid, and the fragrant orchid. Other species dependent on the calcium-rich environment include the devil’s-bit scabious and the few-flowered spike-rush. The fen’s surface varies between richer and poorer habitats, most notably seen in the moss species. In the richer parts, various brown mosses such as the sausage moss, the showy hook moss, and the golden fringe moss can be found. These are entirely different from the nutrient-poor areas’ sphagnum mosses. The poorer areas also have other orchid species, including the fly orchid and the coralroot orchid.
